About
Marie Murphy (b.1979, Cork, Ireland) is a contemporary multidisciplinary artists based in York, England.
For many years her work has been shaped by a sustained attention to the built world, to hidden and unnoticed spaces, overlooked buildings, and the quiet geometries of urban life. Her minimalist approach, abstracts form and shadows, and angle reveal scenes that are at once rooted in reality and open to interpretation. Through layering she creates depth and definition, while subtle shading introduces a quality of ephemerality a sense that what is seen may shift. Her paintings, with their flat blocks of colour, striking angles, and considered use of negative space, invite the viewer to slow down, look more closely, and navigate their own version of a contemporary landscape.
She is now at a pivotal point in her practice, in terms of both subject matter and process. Alongside painting and illustration, she has a strong background in embroidered and printed homeware, and is now bringing all of this skill and knowledge together to drive her practice forward in a way that is expansive and dynamic.
With a broad range of skills and the knowledge gained from over ten plus years running her own studio, Marie is now developing projects that extend her longstanding interest in what is overlooked and undervalued, turning the same quiet attention she has brought to urban space toward the human form.
